Published the same year as
Swann’s Way, Steeple Chase Day, Paris, After the Races captures the frenzied atmosphere at Longchamp racetrack, where in addition to the official entertainment, Parisian society went to enjoy a sartorial spectacle, to relish in and to return the gaze in the exhibition of new fashions.

A frequent collaborator with compatriot Alfred Stieglitz’ pioneering photographic journal, Camera Work, Steichen shared the elder photographer’s ambition to elevate the perception of the status of photography to that of a veritable art. Steeple Chase Day, Paris, After the Races was printed by means of duogravure, a process which sought to achieve the tonal subtleties of traditional drawing and etching.
